Picnic Set with Tote Bag Holder Review

While I wasn't expecting too much for a picnic kit for a twenty, I certainly didn't expect it to be stocked with dollar-store utensils.

The bag itself is a much cheaper, flimsier and less attractive version of of the picnic-kit bags offered at twice to three times the price by the major picnic companies such as Picnic at Ascot, Picnic Time and Picnic Plus. The same number and style of utensils are there in the same exact order with a couple of notable exceptions:

The Contents:
1) The salt and pepper containers are not glass nor wood (nor wood-look plastic) but are a thin plastic with a thinner plastic cap.
2) There is no cutting knife included in this kit.
3) The wine bottle opener is the 99c cheap white plastic waiter-style type found in dollar stores, the type that might only work once if you're lucky and have a cooperative bottle.
4) The cutting board can be found in the front zip pocket and is again the thin white type found in dollar stores.
5) There plates are a thin melamine, only half a step above party plastic.
6) The plates and the napkins don't match. The plates have a green stripe and the napkins are a blue check poly-cotton material.
7) The utensils are lightweight metal and have thin white plastic handles. The knife and fork do not feel sturdy enough or reliable enough to eat a meal that requires some cutting of meat, for example cutting chicken strips from a salad into bite size pieces to go into your mouth.
8) The plastic wine glasses here are surprisingly ok. Half a notch below the plastic ones included in the big brand kits and a notch above disposable plastic partyware. These are not the type of plastic glasses that clearly say reuse me.

The Bag:
9) The bag is barely acceptable.
10) The zippers though thin, pull smoothly
11) The nylon webbing used for the handles is the loosely woven variety prone to snags and cannot carry much weight. Luckily it can carry the weight of the bag. The item arrived with snags and frays in the handle.

Overall I cannot recommend this picnic kit for reliable use. Having several picnic kits, I was hoping to find an inexpensive (not cheap!) gift for when friends visit us, for their personal use and as a souvenir of their visit to the beaches and wineries
